Mother’s Day is meant to make you feel special and appreciated. This is a day to take a break from chauffeuring the kids around, preparing meals, and maybe even dealing with temper tantrums (fingers crossed) as you get showered with loving attention. Celebrate this day with family, but also try and take some time out for yourself with these suggestions:

Give yourself a facial – Here are three great DIY facial masks that you can easily make at home:

Brightening Papaya Mask

Papaya enzymes exfoliate and smooth skin, leaving a rejuvenated complexion.

  • Remove any makeup and cleanse your face.
  • Slice a ripe papaya in half and remove the seeds and pulp inside.
  • Rub the inside of the papaya peel over your entire face.
  • Let it dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.

Smoothing Banana Honey Mask

Packed with potassium as well as vitamins A, B and E, banana, when applied to the face, smoothes the skin and diminishes lines. Honey has the ability to prevent pimples and other unwanted spots thanks to its bacteria fighting properties.

  • Remove any makeup and cleanse your face.
  • Mix together one ripe, mashed banana and a teaspoon of honey.
  • Using a generous amount, rub the mask onto your face.
  • Let it sit for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.

Pore Tightening Yogurt Mask

Yogurt has lactic acid and zinc that helps tighten pores and hydrate while leaving your skin with a glow.

  • Remove any makeup and cleanse your face.
  • Slather plain yogurt onto your face.
  • Let it sit for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.

Step away from meal prep – If you’re the one who usually prepares the household meals, take a break from it today. Let the kids and dad get creative together in the kitchen instead. Here’s an easy and fun recipe to get them started:

Pinto Bean and Cheese Tacos

  • One 15-ounce can of pinto beans, rinsed
  • 3/4 cup of mild salsa
  • One heart of romaine lettuce
  • Eight taco shells
  • One cup of shredded cheddar cheese

Combine the beans and ½ cup of the salsa in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until hot (one or two minutes). Tear the lettuce into bite-sized pieces.

Divide the bean mixture among the taco shells and top with the lettuce, cheddar, and remaining ¼ cup of salsa.

Take a bath – Lock the bathroom door and draw a bath complete with your favourite Epsom salts, a good book and a glass of wine. Sit back and relax, guilt-free, in your own tranquil space while dad takes care of the kids.

This Mother’s Day, enjoy both your family and time with yourself.
