Our Review: Fun, Functional Orthopedic Play Mats

At first glance, you may think that these textured tiles are nothing more than fancy floor mats that protect your little learners’ knees and feet as they crawl, jump, skip and run about the house. But, you would be mistaken! These floor mats are much more than cute, brightly coloured “floor protection”, they offer physical benefits especially for young children that are growing rapidly.

Textured Floor Mats to Help Kids’ Development

My children and I were excited to try out these orthopedic floor tiles provided to us from baby1steps.ca. The tiles are manufactured by a company called Ortodon based out of Eastern Europe. They came cutely packaged, in a brightly designed box with a useful handle, as the contents are quite heavy! As we opened the box, we were pleased to find 8 interlocking tiles of different colours and textures.

We received the “Forest” themed floor tiles, consisting of a variety of tree, acorn and leaf patterns. This particular set is for kids age 2 years+. I noticed right away how some of the patterns were harder to the touch, and others were softer and much more pliable. They appear to be 12” x 12” and made of a variety of plastics, offering varying degrees of hardness.

Also included in the box was a pamphlet showcasing their other designs, as well as tips and tricks on how to use the floor tiles for their therapeutic purposes. Some of the exercises suggested included encouraging your child to balance on one foot and rock back and forth on different “levels” of tile hardness. My children, aged 5 and 22 months, loved how each tile felt different. Some featured designs that were higher off the floor, some were spiky, some were rubbery, some were bumpy. My youngest thoroughly enjoyed walking back and forth on the different tiles, and my eldest liked jumping from tile to tile.

When I asked if they enjoyed playing on the tiles, they both gave huge grins and excitedly nodded their heads yes! We’ve had the Ortodon floor tiles just over a month now, and they still love to walk across them once they come home from school and daycare. I even enjoy the feel of these floor tiles from time to time! It’s like a quick little massage for your feet. I can see these being enjoyed by anyone of any age. The tiles come in a few varieties of shapes and colours. Some of the benefits of using these tiles are:

  • Massage purposes
  • Circulatory stimulation
  • Fun
  • Sensory play
  • Stimulate proper foot development

You can purchase them at baby1steps.ca, the Canadian distributor of this line of orthopedic play mats. All prices are in Canadian dollars and the products are shipped from Canada, so you can feel good knowing there aren’t any hidden tax or duty charges upon delivery.   If you’ve got little ones who enjoy sensory play, these tiles would be a good investment. The quality is great, they are cute, they feel wonderful and they blend in with kids’ décor allowing these tiles to fit nicely in any child’s playroom.
