Ben’s report card came home. And, although he didn’t make all As (or any A, for that matter) I’m still very proud of him. He got all Bs, except for two Cs, which were in printing and reading.
He has needed some support with his printing, and his teacher suggested he enrol in a program through the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) to work with an occupational therapist to help him with his handwriting and printing.
Of course, there’s a part of me that says, “My son is perfect. He needs no help!” but I’m also realistic. He needs help. And I would be doing him a disservice if I lived in denial of that. So, we enrolled him and we are now on a waiting list.
An interesting side note: Ben is left-handed, as am I. I notice with my own handwriting that it’s a bit messier and a bit smaller than my right-handed friends. I pointed this out to his teacher and wondered if many other lefties had a problem with printing.
Now, reading is another story! When Ben gets nervous, he just comes to a halt; he’s stubborn AND lacking confidence – a tough combination. Learning how to read has been challenging so he tends to stop altogether. But we are spending more and more time reading together. In fact, after the report came home and we talked to him about the areas that needed improvement, he asked if he could practice with us once a day. This is HUGE. Also, his reading improves every day we read together. I’m expecting the C in reading to turn into a B by year-end.
I know Ben respects his teacher, and that is amazing. I’ve seen her with the kids and I understand why he wants to strive to be his best around her, and in her class. He’s surrounded by high achievers and a teacher who truly cares. This makes such a big difference. We as parents do our very best but sometimes it takes outside forces to push our kids to realize their full potential!
