I love locally made products and items that are made by Moms. There’s something about the passion and care put into each one that makes them special. The owners of this month’s featured boutique – Lil Bit Baby in Brandon, Manitoba – feel the same way and their product lineup reflects that.
When Kyla and Rob Henderson opened Lil Bit Baby in 2008, their baby girl was 7 months old. As a new Mom, Kyla realized there were many voids in the Brandon marketplace that she and Rob quickly filled – adding a nursing-friendly space to the store; stocking an extensive selection of nursing wear, baby carriers and breastfeeding equipment (they are the only place in Brandon to rend a hospital-grade breast pump!); hosting community events for new and expectant parents; and searching out the most innovative, quality products to fill the shelves.
They offer many lines and brands that are hard to find. In fact, they are the only store in Brandon and surrounding area to carry a full line of nursing bras and tanks by Medela and Canada’s own Bravado (an exclusive) and the staff are trained to fit bras for pregnant and nursing moms. They also carry a diverse line of baby wearing products, including Chimparoo,Beco Carriers, Hot Slings, Peanut Wraps and Jaid Creations stretchy wraps, all of which are exclusives.
Mom favourites such as diaper bags by Skip Hop, Ju-Ju Be and JJ Cole; Bella Bands; Baby Legs; Robeez and Umi shoes; Stonz boots and mitts; Grobag sleep sacks; Gro Clocks and Diono car seats are just a few of the popular items they stock, making local parents happy that they don’t need to search far and wide for the best products for their children.
One of their best-selling local brands is a line called ‘Lil Busy Bees – a line of swim diapers, knit hats, hair accessories, diaper cakes, baby belts, tutus and lace dresses – all made by a Mom of three kids under the age of six! Kyla also raves about the Vija Designs Kangaroo carrier shirt (“a must-have for any nursing Mom”). It is a kangaroo carrier up to 15 pounds, a skin-to-skin shirt, a nursing shirt and a post-partum support shirt all in one – that’s what I call a good value!
Another of Kyla’s favourite Mom-made products is Lucy Designs’ new line of diaper bags. Lucy has grown children now, but she is known across the country for her stylish and unique handbags. In fact, Halle Berry, Selena Gomez and Madonna all picked up one of Lucy’s designer bags at the Toronto Film Festival last year. She has recently started making gorgeous diaper bags – and Lil Bit Baby is selling her first set!
While it’s true that many stores have great product selections, but Lil Bit Baby prides itself on exceptional customer service, too. It goes beyond just service – they try and establish a personal relationship with each customer that comes through their door. Says Kyla, “I’ve hugged many an overwhelmed Mom and had many, many visits from Moms stopping by on the way home from the hospital so I can meet their new little ones. I think it’s these reasons that make our customers love us. And it’s certainly the part I love most about owning my store.” Kyla is also proud of their commitment to the community – hosting baby-wearing playdates, where Moms in the community share their experiences with different brands and styles of baby carriers; offering free demos on all their carriers, wraps and slings; hosting Fit4Two classes and “Coffee Mommies” sessions, which feature subject matter expert guest-speakers; and doing in-store fundraisers (such as photos with Santa) in support of the local food bank, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Westman Crisis Pregnancy Centre. Kyla and Rob have also been quite involved with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life and other organizations on a smaller scale, like the Manitoba Lung Association and the Brandon Humane Society, among others. Another way in which Kyla stays connected to her community – she writes a business column for the Brandon Sun and, until just recently, a parenting column for the same paper, where she wrote about her experiences raising her own spirited daughter. On her blog – I’ve Got You Baby – she continues where her parenting column left off, sharing her musings on motherhood with a perspective that’s real, honest and relatable.
