When I had my daughter eight years ago, I remember getting strange reactions when I dressed her in black. This was around the time the book Urban Babies Wear Black was popular and, even though my urban friends “got it”, many people thought it was odd.
Don’t get me wrong – I love pink. She had (and still has) LOTS of pink clothes, but I really enjoyed throwing some black into the mix to reflect her spunky side!
We’ve come a long way since then, which is why this month’s featured boutique – Heart n Soul Kids located in Vaughan, Ontario – is so amazing. They offer funky, unique clothing for kids that defies traditional boundaries.
It all started when two moms forged a friendship in a coffee shop and, four years later, in the very same coffee shop, the idea to start Heart n Soul Kids was conceived. Founders Rachelle and Lori noticed the lack of funky, urban clothes in the Canadian market, especially in boys wear. They wanted to create a website that offered unique brands that were not easily available to Canadians, and combine that with great customer service. Rachelle, having a background in sales, and Lori, a background in design, made for the perfect collaboration.
This boutique, which just celebrated their 6-month anniversary, was recently featured on People.com and already has a robust social media presence.
What I love about the site is the unique selection of kids’ clothes… so different from almost any other boutique I’ve found. They carry a wickedly cool lineup of brands that parents and kids love!
Lines like Milk & Soda, Tuli Bert, Beau Loves, yporqué, OmamiMini, Rowdy Sprout, HuxBaby, I Dig Denim, Pop Kids,Munster Kids and Electrik Kidz (from Montreal) are the perfect antidote to traditional cutesy clothing. They offer a fun array of accessories, too, from headbands and bracelets to hats, tights and backpacks… everything your child needs for back-to-school.

Lori and Rachelle take great care in choosing the brands they carry. One example is Molo, a Danish line that they have coveted since the inception of their store. Molo, along with many other new brands, will be available on their website starting in spring 2016. And, due to high demand for bigger sizes, they’ve decided to stock items up to size 10!
Heart n Soul Kids has been fortunate to have such amazing support from their customers, and they like to pass it on whenever possible by supporting small independent brands (like Lemons & Lace) and giving back to the community and those in need. This is one reason why they love Bixbee – their One Here. One There.® program provides a school bag with supplies to a child in need for every backpack sold. And what cool backpacks they are! Their ergonomic horizontal designs feature animals, cool prints and more.
With the start of the new school year right around the corner (and birthday party season in full swing), you might find yourself in need of a few kids’ items. If so, Heart n Soul Kids’ website is chock full of awesome products that you can browse from the comfort of your home 24/7! If you’re living in the Toronto area, you can visit their showroom by appointment (email firstname.lastname@example.org to book yours!).
