Buying eco-friendly products and supporting local businesses is extremely important to many parents today. And Leslie Charlton, owner of Groovy Mama in Regina, Saskatchewan, is no exception. Leslie, an artisan who spent many years selling her handmade items at craft sales and galleries, had the desire to open her own bricks-and-mortar shop eventually. It was only after she had her first child that her vision was clarified – she decided to open a kids’ boutique featuring local, eco-friendly items and exceptional customer service. In 2004, Groovy Mama was born.
Featuring a majority of Canadian-made products, with an emphasis on natural fibres and materials, Groovy Mama has what Leslie calls, “a distinct prairie vibe”. When choosing their brands, the more locally they are made, the better. In turn, they carry many products made exclusively for them in Regina, including baby accessories, reusable menstrual products, bath and body products and nursery decor items. They’ve even got their own signature line of summer baby hats and bonnets, as well as winter hats and (coming soon!) their new Regina-made diaper bags.
With a large selection of nursing bras, maternity apparel and baby wearing options, Groovy Mama offers lots of resources to help new and expectant Moms find the right fit. In fact, all staff are certified nursing bra fitters and have been trained by the Canadian Babywearing School.
Groovy Mama also carries a wide assortment of cloth diapers, including Bummis (made in Quebec) and AMP (made in Manitoba). Many of the store’s staff members have used cloth with their own kids, so there’s never a shortage of good information for Moms who are new to cloth diapering.
If it’s kids’ clothing you’re looking for, you need to check out Rocks & Roots Apparel from Vancouver Island. This mom-owned business crafts items from hand-dyed bamboo, organic cotton fabrics and recycled leather. Groovy Mama fans love it!
Some of my favourite (Canadian-made!) Groovy Mama picks include…
Colibri Wet Bags – perfect for soiled baby clothes, wet swimsuits and more. (I love the prints!)
Winter Hats – made of wool on the outside and lined in soft cotton inside (so they’re not scratchy), there are lots of designs available in-store.
It’s clear that Groovy Mama is loved for more than just their amazing local wares, as evidenced on their Facebook page.
One fan writes, “Every parent should shop here. The products they stock are relevant and always make me wish I was walking in the door with a higher budget. The staff (owner?) is knowledgeable and genuinely kind. You won’t find this kind of shopping experience in a chain store.” Another fan says, “Experienced advice is the most helpful! Friendly and eager to offer info about many options, not just one, is also extremely helpful!”
This fabulous store has been featured in several local and national publications, including Western Living Magazine, The Saskatchewan Book of Musts, Wish Magazine, and The Regina Ecoliving Guides. It is also listed in the Ecoholic Body Directory of Green Baby/Kids’ Shops.
If you live in (or near) Regina, Groovy Mama is easy to spot when driving through the historic Cathedral shopping district. The converted plum-coloured house has a large flower and vegetable garden out front in the summer months and over the Christmas season the shop’s windows come alive with a moving elf display. No matter what time of year, though, you should stop by!
Love something you see here, but don’t live near Groovy Mama? Visit their website or give them a call and they will be happy to help.
