In the universe of Mom and baby gear, things move fast. There are products on the market now that I would’ve loved to have only two short years ago, when my youngest was an infant. The amount of new items that spring up each month can make your head spin. Choice and innovation are good things, but too many options can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s why, if you’re a new parent, your best resource is a well-stocked local store with knowledgeable and helpful staff – passionate and caring people who put relationships first… and the rest comes naturally. That is the guiding principle of our featured boutique for March – Babble Maternity. Baby. Kids in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
For owner Tara Brewer, Babble is her dream come true, a passion that was fully realized in late 2011.
Unlike many children’s retail stores, Babble was not borne from a desire to find innovative, interesting products for her own babies. In fact, she only had 3 high quality items of baby gear! It wasn’t until her youngest child was 8 months of age that she felt she had missed out on a lot of the wonderful products that were on the market. She knew she still wanted to be in the “baby” phase of her life, but after having two children of her own, she thought it was time to leave the childbearing behind her. The idea to open a store germinated slowly over time – the opportunity and interest developed and presented itself in many ways.
The final decision to open the business came from losing her Dad to leukemia. In Tara’s own words, “I knew I had to start making my own dreams come true. No one would do it for me. I quickly turned to business planning (while on my second maternity leave from 10 years of service in healthcare) and with many hours of dedicated, hard work, Babble was born and opened October 24, 2011.”
Babble is Tara’s passion – she treats her customers like extended family and takes great pride in connecting with them. It gives her (and her staff) great joy to assist customers in many aspects of pregnancy and parenting, such as bra fitting, baby wearing, car seat safety, home safety, teething, cloth diapering, sleeping, nursing, thumb sucking – you name it!
Babble is proud of the wonderful relationships they’ve built with the public health community, local organizations and businesses. They also find great fulfillment in helping other businesses grow, often referring and recommending local, growing businesses for their customers to seek out. While just a young business itself, Babble has very generously donated to many charitable causes in its first year of operation, including The Terry Fox Foundation, Arthritis Society, Juvenile Diabetes, Rotary Club, a local College team, Eagles Ladies Club, Kinsmen Club, the Cloth Diapering Challenge and many more.
It’s pretty evident that Babble is not your average baby store – it is so much more! The huge array of functional, stylish and just plain cool items they carry is impressive, and I love the enthusiasm with which Tara describes them. She is a big advocate of sourcing local products, and supporting local businesses in general. She educates her customers about eco-friendly, multipurpose products and encourages their use for a healthier life and planet. One of her favourites is theBecopotty from BecoThings. It’s an innovative, portable product that is biodegradable at the end of potty training. (How cool is that?) Tara also recommends Canadian-made Applecheeks cloth diapers and accessories – a high-quality line that is backed by exceptional service and brand integrity.
Other favourites include the versatile Aden and Anais muslin swaddle collection (the generous, breathable fabric can double as a nursing cover, swaddle blanket, car seat cover and change pad cover); the Dapper Snapper – a hard-to-find item that keeps “droopy drawers” in check; Earth Mama Angel Baby organic body care products; Undercover Mama – the nursing accessory that turns any (nursing) bra into a tank; Snappy Socks by Corla, a local Mompreneur who has appeared on The Dragon’s Den; 4MOMS’ mamaRoo – a seat (not swing) that moves like Mama (Ellen DeGeneres featured it on her show last year and it’s a huge hit!); beautiful Canadian-made bedding by Sweet Kyla; and the bold, fun – and popular – Ruffle Butts / Rugged Butts clothing lines.
They also carry an enviable stock of kids’ shoes, including hard-to-find KEEN shoes for Kids (durable, supportive shoes, boots and sandals, many of which are washable), Jack & Lily and Robeez brands. And, since every little one needs travel gear, Babble carries some of the finest brands in this category – BOB and Britax, to name a few.
It’s been a great first year for Babble… the first of many, I’m sure! If you find yourself in Southwest Saskatchewan, be sure to look them up in Swift Current and check out their webpage for information on some of their brands. You can also keep abreast of all the fun by liking them on Facebook. And, coming soon, stay tuned for their new web store to make its debut! They look forward to serving you and your little babblers…because that’s what they do best. J
