Years ago, I got into the habit of working out a few times a week. I didn’t really enjoy it but knew it was the right thing to do for my body. However, as time went on, I realized that it was important to find something I liked to do to stay active and agile. (It doesn’t hurt to bring a friend along to keep me accountable, either!)
Enter YOGA. I had practiced it intermittently since those gym days (they offered occasional classes) and, since those workouts were the only ones I actually enjoyed, I decided to incorporate yoga into my weekly schedule.
Fast forward to today, and my Friday morning yoga class with a good friend is the highlight of my week. The only problem? My foam yoga mat has not been cutting it! I have been putting a workout mat underneath it so that I’m comfortable during poses where I’m on my back. Unfortunately, having an extra squishy layer isn’t a good idea when doing standing/balance poses. And constantly switching mats isn’t an option. What’s needed is a supportive mat with good grip – something that, up until recently, I was sorely lacking.
I recently discovered the B Mat from B Yoga at my kids’ school fundraiser. The company had generously donated a B Mat to be auctioned off and, while I wasn’t the lucky winner of that item, I was so impressed with it that I reached out to B Yoga to see if they’d send me a sample for review. (Psst… they were so kind that they even offered to give one away to a lucky MomResource.ca fan! Keep reading to find out more below.) Here’s the lowdown on the B Mat…
B Mat by B Yoga
You know I love supporting local, so I was happy to find out that B Yoga is a Canadian company based in Ontario that makes high-quality yoga mats and accessories. Based on their assessment of my needs, I was sent a charcoal
B Mat Strong to review. A few details about every B Mat…
- Made of 100% rubber (both natural and synthetic)
- 100% azodicarbonamide free
- Manufactured in Spain
- 1-year warranty
Using B Mat
The first time I tried the B Mat, I could immediately feel the difference between it and my old foam mat; it was obvious that I no longer needed an additional layer to cushion me. I really noticed it while doing the knees-to-chest pose (apanasana) and gently rocking side to side. This movement usually causes me discomfort (hence the need for an additional layer), but my back felt great while using the B Mat Strong on its own. There was a slight odour when I first unwrapped and used the mat – a completely normal byproduct of natural rubber – but it wasn’t unpleasant in any way. It is now undetectable after a few uses.
Which B Mat Is Right For You?
B Mat comes in three thicknesses to suit different needs. At 4 mm thick, B Mat Everyday is a wonderful all-purpose mat to use for any kind of yoga practice. B Mat Traveller is the 2 mm lightweight, on-the-go version – perfect to take on your next adventure. At 6 mm, B Mat Strong (shown below) is great for anyone who wants a little more comfort and cushioning or who has a high-impact yoga practice.
There are 7 gorgeous colours to choose from, as well as a long version (85″ vs. a regular 71″ mat), ensuring that even the tallest yogi won’t have their feet hang off the end of the mat during savasana. 😉
While the quality is amazing, it is also reflected in the weight of the mat. I reviewed the B Mat Strong, which is the thickest (therefore heaviest) of the mats, weighing in at 5 lbs. The walk to my yoga class takes 20 minutes (at a brisk pace) and I carry it using a lightweight strap that doubles as a yoga strap (shown below, in bright pink). The B Mat Strong is noticeably heavier to carry than a low-quality mat, although not uncomfortable. In my opinion, it’s not a deal breaker, especially when I take into consideration the benefits of using the thicker mat during my practice, but bear this in mind when choosing the right B Mat for you.
Now that I’ve used the B Mat for a few weeks, I can honestly say I’d never go back to using my old yoga mat. The density of the 100% rubber B Mat supports and cushions the body, while its superior grip reassures me during each pose: there will be no slipping here!
Whether you’re a die-hard yoga fan or are new to the practice, a good mat is essential. I love how yoga calms the mind and body, strengthens my muscles and helps me stretch out all of the week’s stress. I highly recommend the B Mat for every level of yogi. There’s even B Mat Mini for kids, so the whole family can practice together!
My Friday morning yoga class is me time that I don’t give up for (almost) anything. If you’re still searching for an activity that benefits your body and mind, try yoga. (We’ve got a few resources to help you get started.)
