Kids’ birthdays are wonderful… but are also a lot of work! If you’ve ever hosted a party for your munchkin and their friends, you’ll know it’s not for the faint of heart. The planning that goes into even a simple party can be overwhelming. You’ve got to create the invitations, decide on the menu, bake (or buy) a cake and – the hardest part (in my opinion) – come up with interesting activities to keep the kids busy.

Call me cheap, but I don’t like to spend a lot on birthdays, nor do I think one needs to spend a lot. There are many easy ways to make it special long after some crappy loot bag has been thrown to the wayside.

With that in mind, here are four of my favourite easy, stress-free ideas to make your kid’s next birthday amazing!

“Up” Your Loot Bag Game

Every Mom wants to ditch the loot bags, but only the strong follow through! Yes, it’s tough to deal with the social pressure (i.e. your protesting 6-year-old) of not handing out bags of junky toys that will end up in the landfill, so why fight it? Instead of typical loot bags, kill two birds with one stone by planning a simple craft activity that doubles as “loot”. Throw in a few candies from your local bulk foods store and you’ve got yourself a loot-bag-that’s-not-really-a-loot-bag.

My current favourite “loot” activity: perler bead keychains! Check out this recent post from Crystal at Hello Creative Family, with her Pusheen fusible bead keychain, shown below.

Personalize Their Birthday Experience

Now you can have your child’s favourite characters sing Happy Birthday them – with Netflix Birthdays On Demand! Your kid will be blown away to their favourite characters serenade them on their big day! Find out more here.

Create Custom Party Elements (Less Than 10 Minutes Each!)

You can do this…even if you’re not crafty! Check out this video showing how to create custom party hats, a balloon throne and cupcake toppers in under 10 minutes.

Make Their Birthday Morning Special

Our family birthday tradition is chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast which, if you’re not a morning person, you can make a day or two in advance (simply warm them up on the big day). Easy peasy! No matter what your child’s favourite breakfast is, they’ll feel special knowing you made it just for them. ❤️
