So let’s say you and your partner have a wedding to attend in a couple weeks. The event isn’t kid friendly so you need to find a babysitter for the night. Now, this is a big deal and a very stressful process for some parents (especially if this is your first time hiring help); between all the horror stories on the web and the feedback from friends and family, choosing the best fit for your child and your family can be a daunting task.
Follow these few steps for peace of mind:
Step 1: Only choose your potential sitters from highly ranked websites or by word-of-mouth. It’s very likely this will be a pleasant experience for you and your baby if the sitter is referred by a friend who’s already used her before and liked her services.
Step 2: Make sure the sitter you pick has experience with infants and knows CPR. This is actually crucial! Also, ask for references : the more, the better!
Step 3: Congrats, you’ve picked your babysitter! She’s at the door, it’s time to introduce her to your baby! Go slow, some babies love everybody and aren’t shy at all, but others may take more time to warm up. Let’s start by introducing the sitter while baby is in your arms. When you feel your child is more comfortable, it’s time for the sitter to hold her.
Step 4: While the sitter is holding your bundle of joy, give her a tour of the house and show her where the baby essentials are (diapers, wipes, pacifiers, formula or breastmilk etc.) as well as the first-aid kit, back door keys, all important phone numbers etc. Last but not least, let the sitter know by what time baby should be in bed and what his regular sleep pattern looks like.
Step 5: It’s time to go! You should slowly (but surely) make your way out by now. Goodbyes are always difficult but they get easier and easier with practice (we promise). You’ve done your homework, picked the best sitter for your sweetheart, so go ahead and have fun tonight. Enjoy every second of it!
