Baby's First ChristmasBaby’s first Christmas is a special and exciting time! As new parents, the holidays offer the perfect opportunity to create long-lasting memories, establish new traditions and share the joy of your little one with family and friends.

We have compiled some tips to help make your family’s first Christmas together extra special.

Holiday Activities

As you plan your holiday activities this year, remember to designate a day or two dedicated to just the three of you. The first Christmas as a new family can be quite daunting with all of the travelling and get-togethers to attend.

These low-key holiday-themed activities will create fond memories you can share with baby when she’s older.

Pick a tree – Bundle baby up and take her to your local Christmas tree farm. Many locations offer plenty of activities to keep you entertained (i.e. sleigh or wagon rides, warm beverages and festive music) and offer an ideal backdrop for the perfect family photo.

Visit Santa Claus – Dress baby up in her best Christmas outfit and head to the mall for a photo op with Santa!

Read a classic – Whether it’s “’Twas the Night before Christmas” or “The Nativity Story”, reading an old classic story to your baby will allow you to reminisce about your own childhood while creating new memories as a family.

Send family photo cards – Including a photo of your new baby in your Christmas cards is a great way to introduce friends and family to your newest family member.

Create a Christmas memory book – Create a special keepsake by gathering pictures and special mementos from each holiday activity and organizing them into a special memory book.

Christmas Gifts

Rather than go overboard and buy baby all of the latest toys (leave that to the grandparents), consider giving her one special gift this year. Some great first Christmas gift ideas include:

A personalized stocking – Giving baby a stocking with her name embroidered on it is an excellent everlasting keepsake.

Baby’s first ornament – Remember baby’s first Christmas with a token ornament for the tree.

A collage of photos – Create a collage of photos from when you were pregnant to the present. This offers a great way to capture the many milestones both you and baby have reached throughout the last few months.

A traditional wood sled – A wooden sled is something you’ll keep in the family for several years to come and will help create many fond winter memories!

In addition to buying gifts for baby, consider giving your partner something special that you both can share. While your baby was a beautiful gift on her own, you both have endured many sleepless nights and deserve a treat!

Some gift suggestions include:

  • A couple’s massage at your local spa.
  • Dinner reservations at your favourite restaurant (and babysitting, courtesy of Grandma and Grandpa).
  • A digital photo frame with pictures of your new family already downloaded.
  • A thoughtful letter expressing your appreciation and love for one another.

Family Traditions

Whether you’d like to honour age-old traditions (i.e. attending church, hanging a stocking or leaving out cookies for Santa), or start something completely new, baby’s first Christmas is an excellent time to introduce the holiday routines you’d like to follow year after year.

Some of your family traditions might include:

  • Exchanging holiday PJ’s.
  • Opening one gift from Santa on Christmas Eve.
  • Playing a special Christmas Carol or reading a special book.
  • Watching Christmas-themed movies as a family.
  • Cooking up a favourite meal.
  • Taking an annual family portrait.

Baby’s first Christmas is a wonderful time that you will forever cherish. We wish you and your family a Happy Holiday!
